Fresh air is good for babies, even in winter — the trick is keeping them warm without overheating. Because babies cannot regulate their temperature the way we can, a few simple habits make cold-weather outings calm and cosy.
Start with layers
Layers trap warmth and let you adjust as you move between cold outdoors and warm shops. A good rule: dress your baby in one more light layer than you are wearing. To check they are comfortable, feel the back of the neck or chest — warm and dry is right; hot or sweaty means one layer too many.
Footmuff or snowsuit?
- Footmuff — best for the stroller or pram. Your baby stays in their normal clothes and slides into a cosy, insulated cocoon. Easy on, easy off, no overheating indoors.
- Snowsuit — best when your baby is being carried or actively out and about, giving all-over warmth with hood and feet covered.
Many parents use both: a snowsuit for being carried, a footmuff for the stroller.
Important — car seats: never place a baby in a car seat wearing a thick snowsuit. Bulky padding compresses in a crash and leaves the harness too loose. Instead, buckle your baby in thinner layers and tuck a footmuff, blanket, or cover over the top of the harness.
Don't forget the small parts
Most heat is lost from the head, hands, and feet, so a soft hat, mittens, and warm socks or booties do a lot of quiet work.
Our footmuffs and snowsuits, like the Arctic Cloud Snowsuit, are made from soft, insulating fabrics in calm, timeless colours — warmth that still looks like your brand.
